- I'm a full-time mom to 4 wonderful boys ages 19, 17, 15 and 13. My sweet hubby, who happens to be my best friend, is a pilot. We have been married for 27 years, but have known each other since 1st grade. I was a middle school math teacher, but began staying home with the birth of my 4th child. After being home for 8 years, I went back into teaching. I currently teach 4th grade math.

hey. As a pretty regular reader, I've noticed that you don't receive a lot of dissenting comments. Respectfully, I offer my dissent, on the basis of both ideology and faith. Post if you like. Simply:
I find this video extremely disturbing.
Admittedly, I am an intellectual, a liberal, an "elitist," an artist, a New Yorker, and a queer. Religion is pretty central to my world: I have an M.A. in Comparative Religion and have attended seminary courses in 2 different faiths -- Christian and Buddhist. Studying the world's religions -- including Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism, Judaism, Islam, Christian Mysticism, Russian Orthodox, etc., etc.-- has expanded my understanding and deep relationship with God. "One" way, "one" vote, "one" faith, "one" whatever....no. The ways of God are mysterious and brilliant. God wants to engage us, and will reach us in whatever framework is most passionate and relevant for us as individuals.
I am intellectually curious, skeptical of literal mindedness, and open to having my belief system challenged constantly. Opportunity for progress opens up when people who don't share the exact same beliefs engage in a robust dialogue. Not only from a position of "agreeing to disagree," but a willingness to allow deeply held beliefs to shift, even in the tiniest. This is just essential.

Hey, girl...was just thinking about you the other day.
I am flattered that you consider yourself a regular reader. I hope to "offend" you just enough to keep you coming back.
So, here we go:
First, I DO publish the disagreements, as long as they are not personally insulting to me or any other who leaves a comment. It just happens that a majority of the readers agree with me...though you should have been around about 6 months ago. YIKES! I do use the right to edit out words that I find to be derogatory (as I did with your comment). Perhaps it is not derogatory, in your opinion, or to any others who read, but I do it because I can.
Secondly, studying a lot of religions? That, my friend, is where the danger lies so I'll pray for you on that. And doesn't that go against your self-proclamation of being an "elitist?" Don't confuse me with a "religious fanatic," please. I am Christian...not by denomination, but because I choose to follow Christ...pure and simple. And HE, as well as the ONE WAY, are just that, pure and simple. (one vote? do I get two?)
As far as the shrimp cocktail....seriously? After all of your study, you should know that it is not a problem because Jesus came and fulfilled the law. I no longer fall under Levitical Law. But you know that, right?

i was being sarcastic about the elitist business and the shrimp cocktail, if that was lost on you. Since your faith seems to be one of the more marginalized/arcane of the world's religions, I actually have no idea whether you consider yourself under Levitical Law or not. Most academic or seminarian studies would not take notice of the particularities of your beliefs, unless it were a particular survey on your specific faith. I find it interesting that you would assume anyone who had studied religion would be well versed in your beliefs. Only judging from what you assert on your blog, they are most unlike any other sort of progressive Christian doctrine I have encountered.
I am not "offended" by reading your blog but simply disagree. I am completely baffled as to why there is "danger" in people of different faiths having dialogue together. WTF???? Your prayers are lost on me. There are many Christian churches who offer courses of study to examine other world religions as a way of understanding one's own more deeply. good example:
